O que eu aprenderei?

Provides technical training in singing, music skills, specific dance forms, improvisation, and acting, including acting for the camera.

The course also provides the opportunity for student performers to acquire specialist skills such as the creation and production of self-devised material, arts management and musical skills such as accompanying.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts to fulfil professional contractual requirements and legal obligations required in music theatre.
  • Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge with depth of rudiments of music, history, vocalisation, stagecraft and terminology required for music theatre in both a global and international context.
  • Demonstrate cross-cultural awareness, including Australian Indigenous cultures, and apply culturally sensitive communication skills in a range of professional contexts.
  • Demonstrate initiative and judgement and use trans literacy proficiency in planning, problem-solving, and decision making to create and perform self-devised material that is spoken or sung in accordance with professional expectations.
  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own learning in preparing for auditions and professional practice through independent research and self reflection.
  • Demonstrate skills and understanding of musical theory and analysis, sight singing and dictation, and musical skills in accordance with AMEB standards.
  • Exercise critical thinking and judgement to identify and solve problems during the translation and expression of theatrical works to performance.
  • Review, analyse, and synthesise knowledge during musical theatre performance to accommodate the requirements of different roles and incorporate agility and imagination in improvisation.
  • Successfully communicate knowledge and ideas in solo and ensemble performances through singing, vocal work, movement, or dance in diverse styles.
  • Work both individually and collaboratively to generate and innovative concepts and ideas in music theatre for diverse audiences and settings, using sustainable resources.

Employment opportunities

This course produces graduates who are fully equipped to enter the theatre profession as performers in both musical and non-musical areas, as well as film and television. By studying at WAAPA, students gain practical performance experience in a range of the performing arts, preparing them to work professionally in a wide range of theatre activities.

All applicants are required to attend an audition, and attend an interview. The audition and interview are comprehensive, information relating to requirements and procedures is available from WAAPA.

All applicants must meet the academic admission requirements for this course.

  • AQF Cert IV;
  • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course;
  • Aboriginal University Readiness Assessment; or
  • Experience Based Entry Scheme.

Minimum requirements for secondary school results can change, depending on the country where you completed secondary study.

English competency requirements

IELTS Academic: An overall band minimum score of 6.0, with no individual band less than 6.0. (Results are typically valid for only 2 years.); TOEFL Paper-Based Test (PBT): Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17. (Results are typically valid for only 2 years.); Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 52, with no scores less than 50. (Results are typically valid for only two years.)
