The skills you develop during your MPhil will enable you to develop yourself professionally within your existing sector, or to apply your research, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to new contexts. Graduates can also continue their independent research in a Doctor of Philosophy.

What to expect

Develop your independent research skills with the Master of Philosophy. This postgraduate research course is 2 years of full-time equivalent study.

Make a new contribution to knowledge or evaluate existing material in a new light with an MPhil research project. Complete your project with the production of a research thesis.

Gain the skills to take on theoretical and practical approaches to problems and innovate with a broad range of potential applications. Develop yourself professionally within your chosen sector or apply your research, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to new contexts.

As a JCU Master of Philosophy candidate you’ll undertake focussed research in the tropics. Explore and generate new knowledge to meet the social, environmental and sustainability challenges facing tropical communities.

Tailor your program to meet your individual interests as a research student. Your research project is the largest component of your course, and you will be guided by a research advisory academic team. Access a range of coursework, professional development, and modularised learning materials to help support you throughout the MPhil. You’ll be encouraged to present your research, write research publications and give conference presentations.

Graduates of a Masters Degree (Research) will have:

  • Advanced knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to the field of work or learning.

  • Cognitive skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory and its application
  • Cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice
  • Cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level
  • Cognitive and technical skills to design, use and evaluate research and research methods
  • Communication and technical skills to present a coherent and sustained argument and to disseminate research results to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • Technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse, theorise and disseminate research that makes a contribution to knowledge.

Graduates of a Masters Degree (Research) will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills:

  • With creativity and initiative to new situations and/or for further learning
  • With high level personal autonomy and accountability
  • To plan and execute a substantial piece of research.

To be eligible to apply for entry to a Research Masters degree an applicant must demonstrate the capacity to undertake research at the Research Masters level by the attainment of a Bachelor’s Degree with either a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 5.5 in the final full time year of study, or with demonstrated research experience.

IELTS - 6.5 (no component lower than 6.0); TOEFL (internet based) - 86 (no component less than 21); Pearson (PTE Academic) - 58 (no component less than 54); C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency: 176 (no component less than 169).
