WHY STUDY HEALTH PROMOTION AT DAL?

Health promotion is about encouraging the health and well-being of individuals and their communities. This program is unique in Canada accepting only 40 students each year so we can develop a small strong well-rounded group of health promotion specialists. You'll work together in the program and in the community upon graduation.

What will I learn?

The Health Promotion program offers you the chance to take a variety of unique courses that will prepare you for a successful career. In first year you’ll take a broad range of introductory courses in the School of Health and Human Performance as well as from different departments including Computer Science Statistics Anatomy Sociology and Physiology.

After your first year you'll choose between entering the Community Health Promotion stream or the Research and Policy stream. In your final year you'll complete a 14-week internship; taking you out of the classroom and providing you with hands-on work experience.

Careers and future study:

The opportunities are growing as governments organizations and private businesses see the value of preventative health and enhancing wellness. Since you'll not only learn the theory but also put it to practice in real-world situations you'll be well prepared for exciting careers in many areas where health has an impact on people’s lives. These careers include:

  • community health worker
  • health promoter for chronic disease and injury prevention agency
  • child injury health promotion specialist

Future studies could include programs at the graduate level in health services research medicine or business administration.

Students must have

  • Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
  • A minimum overall average of 70% in five academic Grade 12 courses
  • A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 academic English and any other required subject.

English language requirement:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - 237 (computer-based) 90 (iBT) and no lower than 20 in each band
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5 overall and no lower than 6.0 in each band
  • Michigan English Test (MELAB) – 55
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 61 overall and no lower than 50 in each skill

Deadline: April 1 for September intake.
