As an engineer, you’ll be a creative problem-solver, applying your skills to make significant contributions.

The first year of your engineering education provides a broad foundation in math and science, and provides exposure to various engineering specializations you might choose to pursue.

The Engineering (Applied Science) Certificate recognizes successful completion of the first year of Engineering and is transferable to several BC and Alberta university programs.


Engineering graduates work in a wide range of industries and organizations, from small engineering firms to global technology companies and manufacturers.

Engineering careers include:

  • Engineer (Civil, Chemical/Biological, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Geological, Mechanical)
  • Engineering manager
  • Engineering technologist/technician
  • Engineering inspection (transportation safety, etc)

Talented engineering graduates and their skills are also sought after in other fields such as management and finance.


CNC's Engineering (Applied Science) Certificate graduates are eligible for second-year admission into several universities in BC and Alberta.

Note that admission to these institutions may require course substitutions and other specific entry requirements. Admission may also depend on program availability and GPA cutoffs that are subject to change from one year to the next.

  • UBC (requires completion of the Engineering Certificate within one year)
  • UNBC Joint Environmental Engineering program
  • University of Calgary
  • Other institutions: individual courses transfer to SFU, UNBC, TRU, and other institutions in BC and Alberta.

Applied Science Certificate Courses

The Applied Science Certificate recognizes successful completion of the first year of Engineering. As an engineer, you'll be a creative problem-solver, applying your skills to make significant contributions. Careers include chemical engineer, mechanical engineer, civic/structural engineer, environmental engineer, and computer engineer.

English Language Proficiency either a minimum TOEFL score of 80 (IBT), an IELTS score of 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 or equivalent as determined by the College of New Caledonia or have completed CNC’s English for Academic Purposes.
