O que eu aprenderei?

The Practical Nursing for Internationally Educated Nurses, Ontario College Diploma program is for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who have graduated from a nursing program outside of Canada and wish to become Registered Practical Nurses in Ontario. This program is also for Practical Nurses from Ontario or other Canadian jurisdictions who have a letter from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and must complete specific theory and clinical hours to acquire registration in Ontario.

Throughout the program you develop knowledge and skills to navigate the Canadian Healthcare System. You practice using healthcare-specific language to help you communicate and collaborate with patients and members of the healthcare team. Topics include personal leadership, critical thinking, palliative care, mental wellness, community health and patient care across the lifespan.

You develop your critical thinking and clinical skills through Simulated Participant scenarios and in Algonquin`s state-of-the-art simulation lab. These help you to build confidence in your skills and techniques before working with culturally diverse individuals and patients who exhibit a variety of healthcare needs in clinical placements in the community. The program includes clinical and practical placements in hospital and long-term care facilities.

Taking three consecutive semesters to complete, including consolidation experience, the School of Health and Community Studies will consider your unique needs so that you may complete your diploma studies within one year.

Graduates are eligible to write the Regulatory Exam for Practical Nurses, which, once passed, allows you to register with the CNO to practice in Ontario. The program of study supports the CNO requirements for Canadian Practical Nursing Refreshers as well.

Registered Practical Nurses work in close collaboration with healthcare teams. You may find employment on a team in a variety of:

  • long-term care
  • acute-care hospitals
  • retirement homes, and
  • community nursing settings

Graduates are eligible to apply to the Practical Nursing-Operating Room Ontario College Graduate Certificate program. Graduates of the Practical Nursing for Internationally Educated Nurses program, with one year experience, may be eligible to apply for entrance into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bridging Program for Registered Practical Nurses College Certificate program, required in order to be eligible to apply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

This program is well-suited for students who:

  • Enjoy working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Enjoy working as a member of a team.
  • Are able to perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Are comfortable using technology
  • Value the importance of successful communication in the healthcare setting.
  • Are interested in enhancing their critical thinking processes for decision-making and leadership.
