Acquire the skills needed to support individuals with disabilities in early intervention, community settings, schools, recreation, and employment. You will be prepared to create, implement, assess, and modify plans to help utilize individual strengths and abilities to increase opportunities for meaningful participation in the community.

The Disability Studies program is a two-year diploma that will help you develop the skills needed to effectively work in supporting individuals with disabilities across their lifespan. Individuals with developmental disabilities need support in early intervention, community settings, schools, recreation, and employment opportunities. A skilled workforce is needed to help people with disabilities achieve their goals and effectively participate as members of the community.

Disability service workers can work in a family or community setting in teams or independently to support individuals and their families. Graduates will create, implement, assess and modify plans to help utilize individuals’ strengths and abilities to increase avenues for meaningful participation in the community and society.

Practicum/Work Experience

This program includes 400 hours of practicum and 90 hours of community support learning.

Career Potential

The program will prepare graduates for employment in a number of careers in the non-profit sector for Community Disability Sector Services, and various departments within municipal and provincial governments, including Family Managed Services (Alberta Children’s Services and Disability Services Division).

IELTS Academic: 6.5; no section score below 6

TOEFL iBT: 84; no section score below 21

CAEL: 70; no section score below 70

PTE Academic: 59; no section score below 56

Duolingo: 115

minimum of: 80% in ESLS 8000 or ESLS 8100, and 80% in ESLW 8000 or ESLW 8100; or 50% in ESLG 1898 and ESLG % in ESLG 1860 and ESLG 1861

For students who have taken a native language course in their home country, NorQuest College now accepts native language, Language Arts courses as equivalent to English 30-2 for admission to our post-secondary programs. For more information, see our Equivalencies page in the college website.

Equivalencies will be evaluated by Admissions after the student has applied to the program and submitted transcripts.
