The PhD in Musicology is small and selective, offering the opportunity for intensive directed research, emphasizing professional training in research and scholarship. The program encourages interdisciplinary work linking scholarship in music with humanistic fields relevant to the student’s area of research.


The Graduate Forum in Musicology is the core seminar for all degree programs, focusing on advanced research methods and approaches to the discipline. The Forum also comprises the editorial board for the annual interdisciplinary journal, Musicological Explorations.

Seminars address music from the Middle Ages to present, with recent topics including:

  • Wagner
  • Baroque Opera
  • Notations
  • Performance Practices of Classical and Romantic Music
  • "Reading" Beethoven
  • Music & Print Cultures
  • The Music and Writings of Pierre Boulez
  • The History of Genre

Completion of an acceptable master’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by the University of Victoria; Must meet UVic’s English Language Proficiency requirement or If you have a first-class average in the last two years of a bachelor’s degree, in addition to any requirements specific to your program of study, you may also be considered; Any requirements specific to your program of study; Must meet UVic’s. English Language Proficiency requirement: The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for international applicants is an overall score of 90 on the Internet Based TOEFL (IBT), with a minimum score of 20 in each of the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections. The minimum overall IELTS score is band 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each band.

Applicants to the PhD Program in Musicology must hold the master’s degree in musicology, music history or music theory, or its equivalent, from a recognized university. They must also demonstrate potential for a career in musicology or music scholarship, and have a primary research interest compatible with the areas of specialization of the university’s regular faculty.

English Language requirements:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - Require a minimum of 90 with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 575 on the paper-based test. Individual departments may set a higher standard.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - A minimum Overall Band Score of 6.5, with no score of less than 6.0 on each individual component on the Academic IELTS is required.
  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) - A score of 90 on the MELAB will be accepted
