Musicology is the scholarly study of music in all its aspects. Beyond playing and composing, musicians benefit from understanding the broader significance of music and the role of musicians in historical and contemporary contexts; learning about musical genres, approaches to composition, changing musical styles and expression; learning to research, analyze, think critically, and to write about music; and to perform as knowledgeable and informed musicians. The musicology faculty at U of T is widely known for its scholarly excellence and varied approaches to the study of music, and for its dedication to helping students develop their investigative and analytical skills, and to think creatively and write effectively about music.
Program Requirements
Candidates for the M.A. in Musicology are admitted to a 2-session program and are required to take a minimum of 12 half-courses or equivalent. All students will take MUS 1000H, Introduction to Music Research I, in the first year.
While the majority of elective courses taken must be in musicology, others may be selected in ethnomusicology and/or music theory. With the approval of the divisional course and program advising committee, up to one full-course equivalent may be taken outside of musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory (either in the Graduate Department of Music or in another graduate unit).
One language other than English is required. This will ordinarily be German, except by petition to the Division and the Graduate Department of Music. The requirement can be satisfied by completing GER 300H or its equivalent from another university with a minimum grade of B+, successful completion of GER 6000H, or by passing a proficiency exam set by the Division and the Graduate Department of Music. Students must attempt to fulfill the language requirement during the first year of the program. Any student wishing to petition for a language other than German must do so during the first year.
Students must maintain a minimum overall average of A- in the first year of the program in order to progress to year two.
This program is offered on a full-time basis only and begins in September. We have ONE admissions cycle per year.
