Counselling Psychology (CNPS) offers a Master of Arts Program that is accredited by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Our masters CNPS programs allow students to focus on one of the four areas for which we have accreditation.

Our Mission

The Counselling Psychology Program, in line with the mission of the research-intensive University of British Columbia, creates, advances and critically examines knowledge in counselling psychology, especially with respect to its validity, applicability, limits, and interface with other disciplines. In developing and applying pertinent and innovative research methodologies, the Counselling Psychology Program relies upon and builds qualitative and quantitative evidence to determine effective counselling interventions in educational, community, health, and occupational settings.

Our Culture & Core Values

The Counselling Psychology program recognizes the critical importance of diversity in our rapidly changing and globalized society, and provides leadership in emphasizing culturally-based considerations in learning, human development, assessment and counselling. In addition to its cultural lens, our program embraces positive, growth-oriented, and developmental perspectives across the lifespan. Attention is also paid to the complex ecological influences on individuals, groups and communities. Our faculty members’ programs of research reflect the core values and foci of the discipline of Counselling Psychology: career development, health and wellness, indigenous healing, gender and cultural diversity, disability, and social justice issues. Our Master’s and Doctoral programs address the needs of individuals, couples and families across the lifespan in terms of research, teaching and counselling practice.

Applicants must have 3.3 (B+) on a 4-point scale in third and fourth year-upper level course work. Note: Theological degrees (i.e., degrees in theology or degrees offered by a bible college, seminary or theological school) may not be acceptable as a basis for admission to graduate studies at the University of British Columbia. Applicants will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Other English language requirements: CAE: Minimum score  of B; CAEL: Overall score  of 70; TOEFL Paper-based test with the TWE (Test of Written English): Minimum score  of 55 each for Reading, Listening, and Writing (4.0 on TWE); MELAB :with the MELAB Oral Interview: 85 final score with 3 in the speaking test; PTE(Academic): Overall score: 65, Reading: 60, Listening: 60, Writing: 60, Speaking: 60.

Para estudantes internacionais

Applicants for a master's degree program must hold the academic equivalent of a four-year bachelor's degree from UBC with: a minimum overall average in the B+ grade range (76-79% at UBC) in third-year level and above courses; or academic standing with at least 12 credits of third- or fourth-year courses in the A grade range (80% or higher at UBC) in the field of study; or applicants who have a four-year bachelor's degree, or its academic equivalent, which does not meet the requirements stated above, but who have had significant formal training and relevant professional experience to offset such deficiencies, may be granted admission on the recommendation of the appropriate graduate program or faculty and approval of the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

Applicants from a university outside Canada at which English is not the primary language of instruction must present evidence of competency to pursue studies in the English language prior to being extended an offer of admission. Acceptable English language proficiency tests for applicants to graduate studies are: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): 90 overall with a minimum score of 22 in Reading & Listening and a minimum score of 21 in Writing & Speaking (Internet version); minimum score of 22 in Reading & Listening and a minimum score of 21 in Writing (paper version); or IELTS (International English Language Testing Service): minimum overall band score of 6.5, with no individual score less than 6.0; or MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): minimum overall score of 85, with a final score of 3 in the speaking test.
