Program Requirements

The M.A. in Linguistics; Non-Thesis involves intensive coursework in year 1, followed by additional coursework and completion of a major research paper in year 2. This program is intended for students who wish to gain coursework and research experience in Linguistics beyond the B.A. level. After completion of the M.A., students may choose to continue on to a Ph.D. or pursue a career in a related field.

Applicants must have earned an accredited or recognized university degree (equivalent to a McGill undergraduate degree, Bachelor’s) which would serve as a basis of admission to a graduate degree program at a recognized research-intensive university in the same country. The university degree must have been completed with a minimum standing of 3.0/4.0 or the equivalent, according to grading scale on the transcript. Other English Language Requirements: 567 PBT (paper based test); MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): a mark of 85% or higher; University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): a grade of “B” (Good) or higher; University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): a grade of “C” (Pass) or higher; Edexcel London Test of English – Level 4 – with an overall grade of at least “Merit Pass”; Edexcel London Test of English – Level 5 – with an overall grade of at least “Pass”; McGill Certificate of Proficiency in English or McGill Certificate of Proficiency – English for Professional Communication: Certificate of Proficiency awarded.

Applicants to the M.A. should have completed a B.A. with a specialization in linguistics. Applications are also invited from students with a background in other disciplines. Applicants showing strong evidence for truly outstanding potential but lacking a background in linguistics may be considered for admission to a Qualifying Year (QY).

English Language Scores:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum acceptable scores are: The CBT is no longer being offered. CBT results will no longer be accepted as ETS no longer reports these results. N.B. an institutional version of the TOEFL is not acceptable.
IBT (Internet-Based Test): 86 overall, no less than 20 in each of the four component scores
PBT (Paper-Based Test): 567

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): a band score of 6.5 or greater (Academic module)
University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): a grade of “B” (Good) or higher
University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): a grade of “C” (Pass) or higher
Edexcel London Test of English – Level 4 – with an overall grade of at least “Merit Pass”
Edexcel London Test of English – Level 5 – with an overall grade of at least “Pass”
