O que eu aprenderei?

The Department of Political Science offers programs leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science, and the Master of Arts in Policy Studies.

The following fields of study are offered in the master's and doctoral programs: Canadian politics, comparative politics, gender and politics, international relations, and political philosophy/theory.

Program Requirements

Two MA routes are available: a) a thesis-based MA and b) a course-based MA for both full- and part-time students.

For the thesis-based MA, normally ★18 of graduate-level courses and a thesis (registering in a minimum of ★6 of thesis registrations) are required. For the course-based MA, ★24 of graduate-level courses and a project (POL S 900) are required.

There is no language requirement for the MA degree.

The minimum period of residence for full-time programs is two four-month terms of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of Program

The time required to complete the MA will vary with the program and candidate. Full-time students in the MA thesis-based program will normally complete the program within 18 months. Full-time students in the MA course-based program will normally complete the program within 12 months. A part-time MA student must maintain continuous registration and complete the program in four years.

Applicants are normally required to have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta. An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent) is required. English Language Requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Total score of 90 with a score of at least 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) or equivalent; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5, with at least 5.5 on each test band; Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) - Overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest; Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - 61 with a minimum band score of 60.

The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an average of 3.3 in the last two years of undergraduate work (or graduate work) at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

For all programs, an undergraduate degree in Political Science or close cognates such as International Relations or International Political Economy is strongly preferred. Applicants with other undergraduate majors should normally have at least equivalent to 30 graded credits of coursework in Political Science.

TOEFL with a minimum score of 600 (paper-based) or a total of 100 (Internet-based) with a score of at least 20 on each of the individual skills areas; or
MELAB of 85; or
IELTS 7.0 with at least 6 on each band.

All applications must be submitted on-line through the Faculty of Graduate Studies on-line application system. The online admission application system will be available starting October 1st and will have a deadline of January 15 .
