O que eu aprenderei?

The Department of Sociology is committed to fostering the development of socially responsible citizens of the world.

We offer a graduate program dedicated to enhancing students' knowledge of the societies in which they live, while increasing their ability to think independently and critically about important social issues.

The Gerontology Program collaborates with five departments including Sociology, to provide students with an innovative, interdisciplinary learning perspective. Students have the opportunity to access multifaceted resources and work together with complementary disciplines.

Research and theory in Gerontology is reviewed, and the thesis or major project taken in the collaborating academic unit will have a gerontological focus.

The Research Paper Program consists of Sociology 5111 - Problems and Issues in Sociology and Sociology 5112 - Quantitative Methods or Sociology 5113 - Qualitative Methods, and Sociology 5920 (9920) - Research Paper (one FCE), plus two graduate full course equivalent electives (four half courses) for a total of 4 FCEs. With the permission of the student's supervisor and Department Chair, a fourth year FCE may be substituted for one FCE at the graduate level.

MA Sociology (Specialization in Gerontology)

Students in the Gerontology Specialization must take Gerontology 5710 in place of an elective, attend Gerontology 5790 (non-credit required course) and include aging as a focus of their research thesis or research project.
