Thesis-based

Our thesis-based program offers a focused supervised research experience. This Master of Nursing degree will prepare registered nurses for advanced practice in focused areas that may include direct clinical practice, education, or health policy and leadership.

Full course completion

Our faculty’s mission is to advance nursing practice and promote health through research and learning. Through innovations in teaching approaches and through our programs of nursing research, the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary transforms students into our next generation of health-care leaders.

This degree prepares nurses for advanced practice in focused areas such as direct clinical practice, education, or health policy and leadership, and is a perfect fit for RNs who already have an expert knowledge base and complex decision-making skills. Course-based students have a total of six years to complete the program.

This course-based degree can be completed in combination with the course-based Master of Business Administration.

Applicants must have the grade of 3.0 (B+) on a 4-point scale in third and fourth year-level course work. English language Requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 86 with no section less than 20 (Internet-based) or 560 (paper-based); International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 with no section less than 6.0 (Academic version); Michigan English Language Battery (MELAB) score of 80, or higher; Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 59, or higher (Academic version).

Minimum education:

Registered nurse holding CPR certification at the Basic Rescuer or Basic Cardiac Life Support or 'C' level. A four-year baccalaureate degree, normally in nursing, along with: One undergraduate course in research methodology One undergraduate course in statistics

GPA: A minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (a minimum of 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units) of the undergraduate degree.

English Language Requirements

  • TOEFL score of 97 (Internet-based) or 580 (paper-based).
  • IELTS score of 7.0 (Academic version)
  • MELAB score of 83, or higher
  • PTE score of 68, or higher (Academic version)
  • By successfully completing Tier 3 of the University of Calgary's International Foundations Program
