O que eu aprenderei?

The department participates in graduate Co-operative Education, which integrates periods of full-time employment with the academic program. Approval to participate in graduate Co-op is at the discretion of the department. Work opportunities are negotiated through the Mathematics and Computer Science Co-operative Education co-coordinator.

All graduate students are governed by the departmental regulations in force at the time of the student’s initial graduate registration. Students are responsible for becoming familiar with other regulations of the University and by the Faculty of Graduate Studies regulations as outlined in the Calendar.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics emphasizes the following areas (in alphabetical order):

Students must Meet the minimum admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies; Have completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related fields from an academic institution recognized by the University of Victoria; Meet the English language requirements; Have a minimum GPA of 7.0/9.0 (A- grade) on UVic?s scale, or 80-84% range. English Language Proficiency requirement: The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for international applicants is an overall score of 90 on the Internet Based TOEFL (IBT), with a minimum score of 20 in each of the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections. The minimum overall IELTS score is band 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each band.

Students admitted to a master's program will normally have the equivalent of a bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Statistics with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 5.0 (B) in the work of the last two years. (In reality, the average GPA of students accepted over the past two years is closer to 7.5 than to 5.0.)

English Language requirements:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - Require a minimum of 90 with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 575 on the paper-based test. Individual departments may set a higher standard.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - A minimum Overall Band Score of 6.5, with no score of less than 6.0 on each individual component on the Academic IELTS is required.
  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) - A score of 90 on the MELAB will be accepted
