Housed in a historic building located at the main Halifax campus the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science features newly renovated research laboratories containing a wide range of highly specialized state-of-the-art instrumentation.

Our master's students conduct outstanding research in every area of physics with guidance from faculty members post-doctoral workers undergraduate students and technical support staff.

Program structure:

First year:

  • Begin conducting research
  • Pass graduate courses
  • Work as a teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA)
  • Meet with your supervisory committee before the year’s end

Year two:

  • Continue and complete research
  • Deliver a departmental seminar on a topic unrelated to your research
  • Work as a teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA)
  • Write your master's thesis
  • Undergo a final oral defence of your thesis.

  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing

English language requirement:

  • Internet-based TOEFL (Academic iBT): 92
  • MELAB: 85
  • IELTS: 7
  • CAEL: 70 with no band score lower than 60
  • Dalhousie College of Continuing Education (CCE): A-
  • Pearson English Test PTE Academic: overall score of 65 and nothing below 54

The application deadline for September admission is Apr 01 January admission is August 31 and May admission is December 31.
