The Joint PhD in Educational Studies is offered by Lakehead University, the University of Windsor and Brock University. In bringing together a high number of qualified faculty with a broad spectrum of expertise and research interests, the program provides enhanced opportunities for depth and breadth in supervisory expertise. As well, it provides opportunities in generating new knowledge and directions in research. With a focus on nurturing students as developing scholars and leaders we promote professional development through collaboration fostering links between schools and universities, and promote partnerships locally, nationally, and internationally.

To be admitted to a PhD program, a student should hold either an appropriate master’s degree or, students with a bachelor’s degree already registered in a master’s program, may convert to PhD studies in year 2 of some of the master’s programs. Students will normally be expected to have attained an 80% average and have achieved significant research progress as determined by their supervisory committee. In exceptional circumstances, a student may be admitted directly to Doctoral studies with a four-year Bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent; his or her academic standing and research potential must be demonstrably commensurate with readiness for doctoral study. English proficiency requirements: IELTS (Academic) Minimum overall score of 6.5, with no subtest below 5.5, TOEFL iBT Minimum overall score of 80, with no subtest below 19, CAEL Minimum overall score of 60, with 60 in writing, and no other subtest below 50, CAEL CE (Computer Edition) Minimum overall score of 60, with 60 in writing, and no other subtest below 50, PTE Academics Minimum overall score of 60, with no subtest below 60.

Completion of a undergraduate degree followed by a Master’s degree in education with A standing;

A graduate degree in another discipline:

  • May be considered if academic suitability can be demonstrated
  • May be required to take additional course work, either prior to entry into the program or concurrent with program course work

Research competence is demonstrated by the completion of Master's thesis

Equivalent evidence of research capacity is required if a thesis has not been completed.

English proficiency can be demonstrated in one of the following ways:

  • A minimum score of 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no individual sub-category score less than 6.5
  • A minimum score of 100 on the Internet Based Test (iBT) version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), including a minimum score of 27 in the Written component and a minimum score of 27 in the Reading component.
  • A minimum score of 60 (Brock & Lakehead Universities) and 70 (University of Windsor) on the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) examination.
