O que eu aprenderei?

The master's program in geosciences is a research-oriented course. Building on the basics and methodological knowledge of the bachelor's program, advanced geoscientific skills from the subject areas of geodynamics, mineralogy, biogeology and exploration are imparted. Students should learn to recognize geoscientific questions in a scientific context, to collect, analyze and interpret data independently and with appropriate methodology, as well as to critically assess and use the scientific literature.

The range of courses is divided into four subject areas, one of which is chosen as a specialization:


Alternatively, a combination of English-language modules can be selected from all specializations in the "International Track".

How is the program structured?

During the first two semesters, the course is characterized by extensive options from the range of courses offered by the disciplines involved. A total of twelve elective modules are to be chosen. These include three core modules from one of the following subject areas. The remaining nine modules can be selected as required.

Mineralogy: isotope geochemistry, sediment geochemistry, materials science for geoscientists
Geodynamics: Applied Tectonics and Surface Processes, field internships, mapping course
Biogeology: Paleoecology of marine ecosystems, Palaeoecology of Terrestrial Ecosystems, Facies analysis
Exploration: exploration practice, applied sediment geology, advanced geophysics

The choice of core modules ensures that students acquire sufficient basics in the respective subject area in which they will then write their master's thesis. The other nine compulsory elective modules can be freely selected and thus enable both a far-reaching specialization and a study of the entire range of geoscientific research.

The master's thesis and the three additional compulsory modules Scientific Work 1 + 2 and Scientific Presentation form the focus of the second year of study. These modules enable students to acquire practical, interdisciplinary key qualifications. You can acquire methodical, conceptual and practical skills for scientific work in close cooperation with the employees of the university work and research groups.

Career prospects

The master's degree enables you, depending on your personal course of study, to work in business (e.g. exploration, materials research, laboratory management), in public authorities (e.g. geological state offices, federal authorities, local authorities) or in science at universities or large research institutions.

Students must have a Bachelor’s degree. In addition, they must be fluent in German and solid in English.

Para estudantes internacionais

Anyone who has completed a geoscientific or related undergraduate university course with an overall grade better than 3.0 can be admitted to the course.
Important technical prerequisites for the master's program are sound natural science foundations in the areas of mathematics, physics and chemistry as well as basic geoscientific knowledge from the areas of general geology, mineralogy, paleontology and sedimentology.

The courses can take place in German and English. Good German and English skills are expected.
