The School is home to an active and internationally recognized research culture, characterized by diversity and dynamism. The values of intellectual enquiry and debate are pursued through individual scholarship and collective research. By means of both disciplinary expertise and interdisciplinary collaboration, the School contributes to the academic exchange of ideas at national and international level. This vital research culture further informs undergraduate teaching, offers supervision opportunities at postgraduate level to the researchers of the future, and engages with wider society and culture.

The School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics offers a welcoming research and learning environment for MA, MLitt and PhD students. We have an active and supportive Graduate community in our School with regular events and get-togethers organised throughout the year.

To be eligible to enter one of UCD’s PhD programmes, a candidate must have reached a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree. In some cases, a Master’s degree may also be required. In certain cases, a candidate may be able to provide other evidence to the School in order to satisfy the entry requirements of the programme.
IELTS: An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University:
A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +.
A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section
Cambridge Examinations
English language examinations administered by the University of Cambridge: 176+ on Cambridge English scale (with no less than 169 in each skill and use of English)
Acceptable Examinations:
Proficiency Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2).
Advanced Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2)
First Certificate, Grade A (i.e. CEFR Level C1)
Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item in the Communicative Skills section.
