This postgraduate programme delivers a comprehensive syllabus of media skills. It is designed to equip you with the key practical competencies needed to work in a professional media environment today along with the critical academic depth of a postgraduate qualification.

During the course, you will be challenged in real journalistic situations including producing articles to deadline, editing, designing and printing newspapers, magazines or creating online news content. Radio skills from recording and editing interviews, creating podcasts and running a radio station 24/7 are part of the course work on this programme.

Students can also choose a range of media specialism’s including Video journalism where you’ll shoot, edit and present your own news package, as well as Sports Journalism, Photojournalism, International Political Economy and Business of Digital Media.

Acquiring key media skills is one aspect of the course. Mastering them involves developing a critical depth through an understanding of essential media, communications and sociological theories. This will give you the critical depth necessary to become a media professional and a more rounded communicator, capable of taking up media employment upon graduation.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Media Communications programme is a 60 credit programme which consists of the ten taught modules and does not include the dissertation module. As assignments are designed to reflect the specific educational requirements of each particular module, they can differ significantly from one module to another (e.g. essays in Sociology of the Media, research proposals in Research Methods; the production of a radio programme/ newspaper article in Writing and Reporting, exercises in layout and design in Newspaper and Magazine Production; presentations in Communications and Audience Theories, etc.) On completion, students possess an extensive array of skills enabling them to secure media based employment.

Our tutors follow excellent teaching practices, using up to date techniques and technology. Students on our QQI validated Journalism and Media courses are entitled to student membership cards from the National Union of Journalists, which recognizes the courses for professional training.
