Leiden University’s Master of Laws in Advanced Studies in International Dispute Settlement and Arbitration (L.L.M.) is an high-level postgraduate programme on the theory and practice of international dispute settlement and arbitration in international law.

The LL.M. International Dispute Settlement and Arbitration focuses on general principles as well as specific methods of dispute settlement in international law, with a strong emphasis on international arbitration.

This master allows you to specialise in international dispute settlement and arbitration with a strong emphasis on international law, while at the same time connecting to other related fields of law, such as arbitration in the international commercial law context. It also includes extra-curricular activities such as a moot courts, programme trips and visits, workshops and group exercises.

The classes are taught in a seminar style and require your active participation. You will be taught by lecturers who come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are experts in their field further face-to-face instruction in individual consultations will also take place.

This master allows you to specialise in international dispute settlement and arbitration with a strong emphasis on international law, while at the same time connecting to other related fields of law, such as arbitration in the international commercial law context.

Programme outline

The programme consists of eight mandatory courses and a thesis. The first semester focuses on general principles and theories, while the second semester deals with specialised subjects, including various courses on arbitration.

The programme includes a significant research dimension, and you will be required to write a thesis on a topic of your choice.

Applicants with a Bachelor degree in Physics from any recognized university anywhere in the world will be considered based on the study programme, their grades and their motivation. IELTS: minimum 6.5; TOEFL: internet based 90; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE), minimum grade C.

In order to be considered for this advanced master’s programme, you should:

  • hold a law degree that gives access to the legal professions in the country where the degree was obtained;
  • graduates from fields other than law may also be admitted, provided their previous studies and/or professional career included a substantial legal component;
  • demonstrate a sufficiently high performance in their previous studies, validated by marks on their University Degree/Transcript and the accompanying mark criteria, and letters of recommendation from current or previous professors and/or employers.

Language requirements:

  • proven English language proficiency, demonstrated by way of a TOEFL test (overall score of 100 Internet-based), or IELTS test (overall score of 7.0), or Cambridge English Proficiency certificate (CPE)
  • in addition to the above-mentioned overall English test scores, minimum band scores of IELTS 6.0 (TOEFL 20) are required for all sub-sections.
