The Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory master's specialisation bridges the gap between theory and the world of algorithms and applications. The courses are directly related to our research.
What does this master’s programme entail?
The Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory master's specialisation focuses on number theory in the broadest sense, ranging from discrete dynamical systems to arithmetic geometry and motives. There is a strong emphasis on algebraic methods and a direct interest in the computational aspects of the theory. The programme also has a cryptology component. Leiden offers courses at an advanced level ranging over topics such as algebraic number theory, algebraic geometry and cryptology.
Mathematics and Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory: the right master’s programme for you?
The research specialisation is aimed at students who wish to acquire a profound knowledge of one of the areas within pure mathematics. There is a strong theme dealing with algebra and number theory as well as a strong theme dealing with topology and geometry. The master’s specialisation Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory is an ideal basis for a career in academia, starting for example with one of our PhD programmes.
The Mathematics and Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory specialisation programme consists of 120 European Credit Transfer System (EC) points and includes a research project (40 EC), advanced courses (min 60 EC) and electives (maximum 20 EC). 30 EC are to be taken from the Dutch national Mastermath programme.
Programme overview
For each student, a programme will be tailored individually. It consists of a choice of advanced courses (at least 60 EC) from algebra, algebraic and analytic number theory, cryptology, and algebraic and differential geometry; a research project (at least 40 EC) and a free choice of courses from any field (maximum 20 EC); required is a total of at least 120 EC.
