‌Music in all its forms is used the world over as a means of leisure, communication and enlightenment. The music industry is prolific globally and offers paid work to a vast array of practitioners.

The Bachelor of Music (MusB) is a specialised three-year degree for those who want to concentrate their studies on Music.

The Bachelor of Music requires a total of 360 points:

  • about 75% must be in Music courses, including compulsory courses at 100 and 200-level
  • in the first year you must take four compulsory courses (60 points) as well as courses towards your chosen major
  • a minimum of 60 points must be from 300-level Music courses.

Students have considerable flexibility in choosing their courses in the second and third years of the MusB degree.

It is possible to combine a music degree with other degrees, such as the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Commerce.

Musical Culture

Music is an integral part of contemporary culture globally. This major investigates histories and contents of music-making, locally and internationally.

Topics include popular music, musical philosophy, musics of the world, musical heritage of the western world, and music in the community.

Career opportunities

Majoring in Musical Culture will position you well for many vocations. The breadth of understanding you will gain through the degree will provide you with a wide array of skills necessary as a music teacher in schools, music researcher and journalist, festival organiser, arts administrator, and music leader in the community.

International Baccalaureate Diploma: Students who have taken English as the language in any of: Language A - Literature (SL or HL), Language A - Language and Literature (SL or HL) or Language B (HL) are exempt from providing further proofs of their competence in English. English language requirements: IELTS academic 6.0 overall (no section < 5.5); TOEFL (iBT) total minimum score of 80, with at least 19 in reading, writing and listening; TOEFL PBT 80 overall with 19 in RD, WR, LS; English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at CCEL - EAP 2 grade C+; Pearsons (Academic) - Overall score of 57 (no section < 50).

Applicants must have completed New Zealand University Entrance through NCEA; or Cambridge International Examinations (CIE); or International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) or any other equivalent overseas qualification.

Applicants must also satisfy our English language entry requirements:

  • IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall score of 6.0, with no band score lower than 5.5.
  • TOEFL (IBT): Minimum overall score of 80, with a minimum score of 19 in Reading, Listening and Writing.
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English - Academic): Overall score of 50, and no communicative skills score below 42.
