O que eu aprenderei?

The Master of Applied Finance and Economics is a joint master's degree in Finance and Economics that can be completed full-time in 12-13 months. Students take two semesters of advanced coursework in both subjects, followed by a practical applications course from November-February.

The MAFE offers students:

  • a coursework-based alternative to the traditional master's research pathway
  • a capstone course that involves hands-on applications of advanced tools and techniques
  • preparation for careers in business, financial, banking and public sectors
  • an excellent foundation to pursue further academic training in the USA or the UK, if desired.

Why study a Master of Applied Finance and Economics at UC?

A Master of Applied Finance and Economics graduate:

  • can demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of current theoretical concepts and frameworks within finance and economics
  • is able to think logically, analytically and critically with respect to the academic literature in finance and economics and explain how this literature applies to real world problems
  • is able to synthesise academic or professional literature and effectively communicate the results of their independent study orally and in written form
  • is able to apply their in-depth knowledge of finance and economics to real problems.

How do I plan my degree?

To qualify for the award of Master of Applied Finance and Economics a student must satisfactorily pass:

  • FIEC675 Advanced Applications in Finance and Economics and

135 additional points selected from:

  • 60 points from ECON 601-669, including at least 30 points from ECON 620-669
  • 60 points from FINC 601-669, including at least 30 points from FINC 620-669
  • FIEC 601 or, at the discretion of the Head of Department of Economics and Finance, an additional 15 points from ECON 601-669 or FINC 601-669

Students must have qualified for a bachelor's degree and satisfied the prerequisites for the major subject concerned. Prerequisites vary between departments, but normally good grades in 300-level courses in the subject is required. Students who have qualified for a Bachelor of Arts with Honours or equivalent with good grades may be admitted to the Master of Arts by thesis (Part II only) in that subject. English language requirements: IELTS academic with an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; TOEFL (iBT) total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening; TOEFL PBT with a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5; CCEL EAP Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade; CAE or CPE score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE with an overall score of 64 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58; NZCEL Level 5.

Para estudantes internacionais

Candidates must have completed a bachelor's degree that includes intermediate microeconomics, introductory business finance, a calculus-based mathematics course and an introductory statistics course and be approved for the degree by the Dean of Business.

Applicants must also satisfy our English language entry requirements:

  • IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • TOEFL (IBT): Minimum overall score of 90, with a minimum score of 19 in Reading, Listening and Writing.
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English - Academic): Overall score of 58 and no communicative skills score below 50.
