This endorsed research degree is completed by coursework and a thesis. It aims to provide a research focused learning environment in which students can develop their independent problem solving skills through supervised research. The degree may be awarded with Distinction.

Study in a number of advanced Engineering courses will provide each student with key technical knowledge to enhance and support their research activities.

Chemical and process engineers transform raw materials into processed, marketable products by chemical, physical, or biological means. They take science experiments performed in the laboratory and operate them on a commercial scale, taking into account economics, safety, and sustainability. Others are involved in the research and development of new products and processes, such as those in nanotechnology, biotechnology, or advanced materials.

This provides you with the opportunity to advance your knowledge and carry out original research in an area that interests you. Resources that are available to postgraduate students include access to highly skilled, experienced technicians, well-equipped workshops, dedicated computer suites, and the support of academics.

The Master of Engineering (ME) includes a thesis from your chosen endorsement of 120 points, and up to 45 points of coursework.

Further study

Students can study a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengineering, Chemical and Process Engineering, Civil Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering at UC.

Career opportunities

Chemical and Process Engineers have many career options including working in renewable energy, medicine, biotechnology, oil and gas processing, food technology, and materials science. A master’s degree in Chemical and Process Engineering from UC typically means that you have conducted research and thus have specialised in one or more areas related to chemical engineering.

In general, this provides graduates with a range of skills (in addition to the specialised research expertise) which are highly valued by employers, including time management, data analysis, and report writing. Many of our ME graduates go on to do further postgraduate study at the PhD level.

Students must have qualified for a bachelor's degree and satisfied the prerequisites for the major subject concerned. Prerequisites vary between departments, but normally good grades in 300-level courses in the subject is required. Students who have qualified for a Bachelor of Arts with Honours or equivalent with good grades may be admitted to the Master of Arts by thesis (Part II only) in that subject. English language requirements: IELTS academic with an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; TOEFL (iBT) total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening; TOEFL PBT with a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5; CCEL EAP Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade; CAE or CPE score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE with an overall score of 64 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58; NZCEL Level 5.

Candidates must normally have completed one of the following:

Bachelor of Engineering with Honours with first or second class honours
Bachelor of Science with Honours with first or second class honours, in relevant subjects
Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering with a GPA of 5 or more.

Students wishing to enrol in postgraduate study must have completed both the academic and non-academic requirements of the prerequisite degree. This includes practical work days, work reports, a workshop training course and a first aid certificate. The programme of study must be approved by the College of Engineering Dean (Academic).

Applicants must also satisfy our English language entry requirements:

IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
TOEFL (IBT): Minimum overall score of 90, with a minimum score of 19 in Reading, Listening and Writing.
PTE (Pearson Test of English - Academic): Overall score of 58 and no communicative skills score below 50.
