EIT’s Master of Nursing Science programme will build on knowledge, skills and attributes which registered nurses have gained in their undergraduate degrees and subsequent professional practice. The programme is designed to meet the needs of registered nurses who are seeking postgraduate study to prepare them for a variety of advanced nursing practice, nursing education, policy, management and other leadership roles.

Outline

The Master of Nursing Science is a 180-credit (one and half years full-time) programme, which enables registered nurses to further develop their knowledge and skills for professional practice. Graduates of the programme will be equipped with expanded nursing knowledge, refined skills for evidence-based practice, enhanced clinical judgment and research skills, which will enable them to deliver advanced nursing practice, nursing education and provide leadership.

The Master of Nursing Science is a Level 9 qualification of 180 credits with pathways for either:

  • 90 credits at Level 8 plus 90 credits at Level 9, or
  • 120 credits at Level 8 plus 60 credits at Level 9

Students will have the opportunity to individualise their capstone research through one of two pathways:

  • a 30 credit Research Methods and Design course plus a 30 credit Research Project; OR
  • a 90 credit Masterate Research Course (MN9.490, currently delivered as part of the MN and Master of Health Science).

The requirement for entry is an undergraduate degree in a health science/ health discipline with a B average or better. Where an applicant does not hold an undergraduate degree in health science, submissions with supporting professional evidence may be considered. English Language Requirements: IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0; TOEFL Paper-based test (PBT) score of 590 (with an essay score of 5.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) score of 79 (with a writing score of 21); University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations: CAE or CPE with a score of 176. No less than 169 in each skill; Pearson Test of English (Academic) score of 58; City & Guilds IESOL: C1 Expert with a score of 42; NZCEL Level 5 Academic.

A personal interview may be part of the application process where required or appropriate.

There are three pathways for admission:

  • An undergraduate degree in nursing with a B average pass or higher.
  • A B average pass or higher in the EIT Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science, or a postgraduate nursing qualification deemed equivalent to the EIT Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science, with a B average pass or higher.
  • Progression to Level 9 courses is dependent upon satisfactory academic progress.

Applicants must be New Zealand registered nurses; or, in the case of international students, must be registered in their country of origin, and preferably have three years post-registration nursing experience.

English language entry requirement

  • IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0
  • TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) score of 590 (with an essay score of 5.5 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) score of 79 (with a writing score of 21)
  • University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 176. No less than 169 in each skill
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) score of 58 with no band score lower than 50
  • City & Guilds IESOL: C1 Expert with HIGH PASS and no less than Pass in each skill or C2 Mastery with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
  • NZCEL Level 5 Academic

Applicants may be admitted with credit transfer or Recognition of Prior Learning.
