French Linguistics comprises the different variants and usages of French. Research in the subject can be both diachronic and synchronic and address specialisations such as semantics, syntax, text and discourse analysis, language policy, language learning and language teaching.


The aim of the third cycle programmes at the Faculties of Humanities and Theology is to provide students with research and communication skills that prepare them for work in academia and wider society, nationally and internationally. PhD graduates from the Faculties of Humanities and Theology shall be nationally and internationally competitive in terms of publications, project applications and positions. The programme is to provide sufficient breadth and specialisation and appropriate teacher training to equip students for teaching posts in higher education.

The completion of the third cycle programme in French Linguistics results in a degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Outcomes for a degree of Doctor in French Linguistics:

Knowledge and understanding

For the degree of Doctor in French Linguistics, the third-cycle student shall demonstrate

– broad knowledge of French, language variation, and literature in French from synchronic and diachronic perspectives

– specialised knowledge of the structure of French, especially with regard to morphosyntax and text structure

– specialised knowledge of linguistic theories with a specific bearing on French

Competence and skills

For the degree of Doctor in French Linguistics, the third-cycle student shall demonstrate

– the ability to communicate appropriately and confidently in French in speech and writing in different registers, especially in academic contexts

Judgement and approach

For the degree of Doctor in French Linguistics, the third-cycle student shall demonstrate

– specialised insights into the social and ideological conditions that are specific to the Francophone world.

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification

2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or

3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

A proof of English proficiency consists of one of the following: English as your native language; a first degree from a Nordic country; a passing grade equivalent to a Swedish 3-year upper secondary course; a TOEFL score of at least 550, with no less than 213 points on the computer based test and no less than 79 on the internet-based one; An IELTS test, in which the "Academic Module" must be completed with at least 6.5 as a result and with no section scoring less than 5.0.
