O que eu aprenderei?

Philosophy of Religion and Ethics is concerned with issues of philosophy of religion and ethics of key concern to people and societies. Philosophy of Religion addresses issues of meaning and truth, in which ontological and metaphysical questions are central. Major emphasis is placed on religious experiences and on the analysis of human existence. Within ethics, problems and theories of religion, ideologies of life and perceptions of humankind are considered, as well as applied ethics. Furthermore, the discipline includes empirical studies of ethical notions, normative approaches to ethical issues and critical review of theories of ethics.

Objectives

The aim of the third-cycle programmes at the Faculties of Humanities and Theology is to provide students with research and communication skills that prepare them for work in academia and wider society, nationally and internationally. PhD graduates from the Faculties of Humanities and Theology shall be nationally and internationally competitive in terms of publications, project applications and positions. The programme is to provide sufficient breadth and specialisation and appropriate teacher training to equip students for teaching posts in higher education.

The completion of the third-cycle programme in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics results in a degree of Doctor of Theology. The doctoral student may be allowed to obtain a degree of Doctor of Philosophy, subject to an application to this effect.

Knowledge and understanding

For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religion and Ethics, the third-cycle student shall demonstrate

– very good knowledge of Philosophy of Religion and Ethics in the past and present

– good knowledge of current research and key issues in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics

Competence and skills

For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religion and Ethics, the third-cycle student shall demonstrate

– the ability to apply different methodological and theoretical approaches within Philosophy of Religion and Ethics

– proficiency in different ways of analysing and processing the chosen thesis research area in a scholarly manner

– the ability to identify and process philosophical or ethical issues raised by religions and their secular counterparts, as well as theology and religious studies, critically, autonomously and with scholarly precision

Judgement and approach

For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religion and Ethics, the third-cycle student shall demonstrate

– the ability to critically evaluate their own position as a researcher in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics, and situate their research in relation to other theoretical positions both within and beyond the field of study

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification

2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or

3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

A proof of English proficiency consists of one of the following: English as your native language; a first degree from a Nordic country; a passing grade equivalent to a Swedish 3-year upper secondary course; a TOEFL score of at least 550, with no less than 213 points on the computer based test and no less than 79 on the internet-based one; An IELTS test, in which the "Academic Module" must be completed with at least 6.5 as a result and with no section scoring less than 5.0.
