The Sustainability Engineering and Management master’s programme deals with the multifaceted challenge of developing products, services and technical systems that contribute to increased resource effectiveness and sustainability.

It is a well-known fact that economic development and human welfare largely rely on accessibility of raw materials and energy. However, the exploitation of such natural resources generates many environmental implications such as climate change, resource scarcity and uncontrolled dispersal of various hazardous substances. In times of global environmental problems and concerns about long-term availability of natural resources such as metals and minerals, incentives for using materials and energy in a more intelligent and efficient way are increasing among governments, companies and other organisations.

McKinsey, one of the largest management consultancy firms worldwide, strains the urgent need for a resource revolution. The aim is to address anticipated economic and political implications of resource scarcity, steadily increasing pollution levels from primary production and unevenly distributed natural resources among regions. Companies are thus facing the challenge of delivering increasing amounts of products and services while at the same time preventing depletion of natural resources, cutting costs and contributing to a sustainable society.

This master’s programme offers a unique knowledge profile and aims at training future engineers that can contribute to such a societal transition towards a more efficient use of natural resources. More specifically, you will learn how to combine a multidisciplinary system perspective with skills in modern environmental and energy engineering. With such proactive and holistic approaches, environmental problems can often be significantly limited or even entirely prevented without jeopardizing human well-being.

The programme combines the perspectives of two research groups - Energy Systems and Environmental Technology and Management - at the Department of Management and Engineering. These groups deal with system solutions and state-of-the-art research in areas such as: renewable energy and bio-fuels, energy efficiency, waste management, urban and landfill mining, corporate environmental management and integrated product-service offerings. Several renewable energy solutions are already implemented in the region which means that you will get the opportunity to see how such environmental technology works in practice. Moreover, there is a national research excellence centre on biogas production and utilisation located at the university that involves a wide network of academic, industry-related and public actors.

Career opportunities

Environmental engineering, including renewable energy solutions, is one of the fastest growing business sectors in Sweden as well as in many other countries. The Sustainability Engineering and Management programme qualifies students for engineering positions in companies and authorities dealing with energy consulting, investment strategies, development of local and regional systems for energy distribution and generation, development of new products and services, renewable energy, environmental consulting, waste management and recycling and strategic environmental management. Several former students have also chosen a career within academia, pursuing PhD studies at Linköping University and other universities throughout the world.

To meet the entry requirements for master's level studies, you must have been awarded a bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen) from an internationally recognised university.

  • IELTS (Academic modules) with an overall mark of 6.5, and no section below 5.5
  • TOEFL paper-based score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test, with a total score of 575
  • TOEFL internet-based score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test, with a total score of 90. Note - TOEFL Examinee Score Records are not accepted. All TOEFL tests must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
