KTH Royal Institute of Technology offers the opportunity to complete a doctoral degree (PhD) in a dynamic, international research environment that features world-class facilities as well as close collaboration with industry and other prominent universities worldwide.

Pursuing doctoral studies at KTH means devoting yourself to a research project under the supervision of an experienced researcher. You will follow an individual study plan, take courses within a doctoral programme and write a thesis.

KTH research in the field of architecture and the built environment focuses on future society. It studies how cities, buildings and infrastructure should be designed and built, how institutions and systems of regulation should be improved to provide a good living environment and good opportunities for industry to develop.

Architecture and the built environment at KTH encompass natural science and engineering as well as social sciences and humanities. Research is carried out at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment in Planning and decision analysis.

KTH issues the following degrees at the doctoral level:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (four years of full-time study)

Applicants must have a degree at the advanced level (master's/second cycle), or fulfilled course requirements corresponding to at least 240 credits, of which a minimum of 60 credits are at the advanced level (master's/second cycle) or otherwise acquired largely equivalent knowledge. Other English Language Requirements: TOEFL (Paper-based) For English 6: Score of 4.5 (scale 1–6) in written test and a total score of 575.

  • a degree at the advanced level (master's/second cycle), or
  • fulfilled course requirements corresponding to at least 240 credits, of which a minimum of 60 credits are at the advanced level (master's/second cycle) or

Special entry requirements

The special requirements may relate to:

  • knowledge from higher education or equivalent studies
  • special professional or vocational experience
  • necessary language skills or other conditions determined by the programme, subject or project.

Language requirements

Students should have the necessary skills in English to enable them to follow courses, cope with compulsory literature, manage everyday communication within the working environment and defend a thesis in English. Requirements regarding skills in the Swedish language may also be imposed.
