O que eu aprenderei?

The English-language master's program Critical Urbanisms of the University of Basel trains a new generation of graduates. He teaches them to bridge the gap between city and countryside and north and south to better understand the complexities of urban living in the 21st century. Internationally recognized professors lead the program and deal with the development of cities and territories from a global perspective. The study program is built around an interdisciplinary research studio in which the students collaborate and combine humanities and social science methods with visual and spatial analysis. The second semester is spent either in South Africa at the African Center for Cities of the University of Cape Town,

Focus of teaching and research

The program is supervised by members of the Department of Urban Studies and employees of the Department of Social Sciences. The students also benefit from close cooperation between the University of Basel and the African Center for Cities at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

In the first and third semesters, students in the Research Studio devote themselves to collaborative, interdisciplinary research practices in which humanities and social science methods are combined with visual and spatial analyzes and representations. The Research Studio takes place in a specially reserved room that has a workshop character. Here small teams of students with different disciplinary backgrounds work closely together and are taught by both the core faculty and external lecturers.

The second semester offers students fascinating opportunities to explore and discuss various aspects of city life. The research focuses primarily on the cities in Africa and the global South, as these are of central importance for the investigation of everyday forms of agency, thus also crucial for today's urbanism. Fifteen students have the opportunity to complete the second semester at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

Another component of the study program are seminars and lectures of the Department of Urban Studies on a variety of topics related to urbanism. Their goal is to provide students with in-depth knowledge of specific professional approaches. Students can also take elective courses from the extensive offer of the University of Basel (eg in African Studies, Anthropology and the Competence Center Cultural Topographies) and the University of Cape Town.

Key themes for teaching and research are:

  • Legacies of empire and comparative colonial after-lives
  • Spatial and architectural practices of mobility and migration
  • Territorial dimensions of resource economies
  • Urban cultures, creativity, and the production of imaginaries
  • Urban governance, politics, and spatial violence
