This programme is designed to provide structured and standardised surgical training and M-level research-connected teaching across the UK in specific orthopaedics sub-specialties e.g. Shoulder and elbow, Limb reconstruction. This programme is delivered during a 9-12 months clinical Fellowship, within specialised centres across the UK, in line with the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programmes, and with their sub-specialty societies (eg The British Elbow and Shoulder Society).
Additionally, the programme aims to develop future leaders in orthopaedics research in line with the University’s research strength in musculoskeletal research within the Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences. This will be achieved by a common module on research and innovation in orthopaedics which will culminate in the development of a grant proposal and if participants choose to do the MCh, a 60-credit research project module.
Participants who register for an award have potential exit points at Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and Master of Surgery degree (MSc). The PGDip may be taken as either free standing awards or as an intermediate exit award for any student who has successfully completed the modules required for these awards or who have failed to progress to the next level of study. Prior to joining the programme it will be a requisite that you have already been appointed to a orthopaedic fellowship position in one of the recognised organisations. Participants will be provided with a supervisor and will undertake work-based training at this organisation.
Career prospects
The programme enhances the prospects of those students on MBCHB programmes. All recruits are practicing clinicians. This programme enhances their career development. This programme provides a formal qualification for those clinicians who are undertaken their consultancy training at 1 of 15 UK based orthopaedic training centres. This MCh will provide accreditation for their study in shoulder / elbow/ limb reconstruction.
