The University of Glasgow has the largest grouping of human and veterinary virologists in the UK. Fundamental research on viruses and viral diseases lies at the core of our mission to translate knowledge to benefit the health of society. Our research programmes span a wide breadth of topics across whole populations to the subcellular level. Key defining features of our expertise include viral ecology and epidemiology, in vivo patho-genesis, diagnostics, molecular virology, viral immunology, vaccines, viral oncology, structural virology and virus genomics and bioinformatics. These programmes are supported by an extensive and state-of-the-art infrastructure and will help students understand how viruses replicate, disseminate, and sometimes cause disease, enabling students to develop a career as a virologist.

Studying virology prepares students for a wide range of careers options not only in basic research in academia but also clinical and veterinary health and the pharmaceutical industry. Many of our students proceed through postgraduate studies in Virology or other infection related subjects. In addition to academia, public health, laboratory diagnostics and the pharmaceutical industry are all work place opportunities that have been taken by our graduates.
