This marine technology foundation year will prepare you for study on one of our three-year BEng degree courses so you can pursue a career in a sector that is thriving worldwide.

Course overview

Our professionally accredited Marine Engineering degrees provide a pathway to becoming a Chartered Engineer and prepare you to face challenges associated with the various specialisms.

This foundation year will help you build the base knowledge you need to progress to any of our marine technology BEng degrees.

This is a full-time programme of study covering core mechanical engineering topics, including:

  • foundation mathematics
  • applied mechanics
  • material science

Teaching methods

You'll learn from staff across various departments of our engineering and science schools.

You'll spend approximately 20 hours per week in taught classes. You'll also spend a further 20 hours attending tutorials and completing laboratory reports.

Your future

The marine technology sector is currently thriving worldwide and in many areas there are acute shortages of skilled personnel.

UK-based and multinational companies have a demand for degree-qualified:

  • marine engineers
  • naval architects
  • experts in computer-aided design
  • engineering specialists

  • surveyors

A large proportion of Marine Technology graduates find employment in:

  • the ship and offshore construction industry
  • shipping and offshore companies

  • regulatory agencies and consultancy firms
  • offshore renewable energy generation

The development of deep-water oil and gas recovery has increased demand for specialists in the design and operation of offshore vessels and processing plants.

An increasing number of graduates enter careers in the design and manufacture of yachts, luxury cruisers and high-speed passenger craft.

A number of our students also go on to postgraduate study and research into new technologies.

Students need to have American College Test (ACT) with a score of at least 26. Students may be considered for first year entry with a GPA 3.2/4 in a High School Graduation Diploma. Students should have SAT Reasoning with 600 in each plus combination of SAT subject tests with 650 in each and AP tests with scores of 3. Students also considered for first year entry: GPA 2.8+ in an Associate of Arts and GPA 2.8+ in 1-2 years of US College or University (Advanced entry may be awarded if sufficient credit has been obtained in relevant subjects). This will be assessed on a case by case basis. Many of our courses require them to have a particular background in the subject they are applying to study. This is known as ‘pre-requisite’ knowledge. If required, they must evidence this knowledge via relevant AP tests, SAT Subject Tests, honors or college level classes. To study History BA Honours they must be able to demonstrate that they have pre-requisite knowledge of World History. The Specific grade requirements may vary depending on the individual course.
