Why study this course?

If you want to teach three to seven-year-olds, this PGCE Early Years course is an exciting opportunity to launch your teaching career. Addressing multiculturalism, diversity and more, our Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA)-accredited course combines your theoretical training with two practical placements at the school.

Attendees of our PGCE Early Years courses attain high results, with 95% achieving an Ofsted good or outstanding grade by the end of the course and 96% going on to obtain employment, often with their placement schools.

This Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA)-accredited PGCE Early Years course at London Met and one of our partner schools prepares you to teach 3 to 7-year-olds (Key Stage 1) and leads to Qualified Teacher Status.

You will study at London Met and attend two placements at a partnership school of 11 and 13 weeks. We’ll extend your knowledge, develop your classroom practice and help you examine the underlying principles and values that inform current debates around educational issues.

At London Met, you’ll learn about teaching in urban, multicultural and multilingual schools and will address language, diversity and equality across the curriculum. Training within the framework and principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the unique London context, you’ll be well equipped to help maximise every child's’ development.

Your time at our partnership school will be supported by school-based mentors and University-linked tutors. The tutors will also deliver your University sessions, ensuring a continuity of support throughout the course.

Assessment

Your assessment will consist of four elements:

School placement A
School placement B, where your teaching ability will be assessed in relation to the standard for Qualified Teacher Status
a Professional Practice Portfolio which is compiled throughout the year, detailing personal experiences and reflections on your development as a teacher, largely in relation to your practical teaching experience
the Educational Research Assignment, which allows you to explore an educational issue

There are no examinations.

Professional accreditation

This PGCE course is accredited by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).

Where this course can take you

This intensive PGCE leads to a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and enables you to teach either 3 to 7-year-olds and 5 to 11-year-olds. Our students have gone on to become teachers at Ambler Primary, Cleveland Road Primary School, New North Academy and many more.

Students who have completed US Bachelor degrees with Cumulative Grade Point Average minimum of 2.70/4.00 is required with at least 30 credits from one specific subject area, and a relevant well written statement in support of the application that demonstrates the applicant’s suitability, interest and motivation will be considered. Academic IELTS Overall score required: 6.0. Component scores required: Listening: 5.5; Reading: 5.5; Writing: 5.5; Speaking: 5.5.

You will be required to have: a UK degree grade 2.2 or equivalent; pass at literacy and numeracy tests, which are university-based tests that you will be asked to undertake at your interview; a valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and Confirmation of Fitness to Teach (eg a London Metropolitan University Health Check) - you will be advised to apply for these after an offer is made; GCSE English, Mathematics and Science grade C (grade 4 from 2017) or above (or equivalent, see Equivalency Testing or A Star Teachers). If you hold a third class degree, you can apply on the condition that this qualification is supported by a completed Master's degree and relevant work experience. Academic IELTS: Overall score required: 6.0; Component scores required: Listening: 5.5; Reading: 5.5; Writing: 5.5; Speaking: 5.5. Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT): Overall score required: 72; Component scores required: Listening: 17; Reading: 18; Writing: 17; Speaking: 20.
