B.A., B.S. in Physical Education - Exercise Science

The Exercise Science Program is designed specifically to prepare students for careers as personal trainer, exercise physiologist, strength coach, or cardiac rehabilitation. Many students continue their education with post-graduate study in allied health areas (medical school, physician's assistant, physical therapy, chiropractor) or within the field (exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology).

Coursework in the major provides a cross-discipline choice of courses to meet each student's career interests, including study in the following areas:

• Analysis of human motion
• Human physiology
• Kinesiology
• Physiology of exercise

The program offers opportunities for on-site learning, with the internship as the culminating experience. Opportunities for laboratory experience are offered in physiology, biomechanics, graded exercise testing and prescription, and sports activity. Instruction is centered in the 230,000-square-foot Health and Human Services Building.

Numerous opportunities exist in Terre Haute and the surrounding area for students to volunteer with children and adults as coaches, instructors, and mentors. These include the local hospitals, clinics, fitness facilities, and the school corporations.

Exercise science graduates will find a growing demand for their skills and talents in a variety of movement and fitness-based activity settings.

Career opportunities include the following:

• Clinical exercise instructor
• Health fitness instructor/leader in corporate or hospital settings and in public or private fitness centers
• Personal trainer
• Professional positions in the business of exercise/wellness
• Strength and conditioning coach
• Post-graduate education
