Completion of this degree will qualify a student for recommendation to the Michigan State Board of Education for a Secondary Standard Certificate, which will permit the holder to teach the major and minor in the secondary grades.

Majors in Health and Physical Education (HPE) and Visual Arts Education (ART) will qualify for recommendation for a Secondary Standard Certificate, permitting the holder to teach the major in grades K-12 and an additional minor in grades 6-12

Majors in Special Education (SPE) will qualify for recommendation for a Secondary Standard Certificate, permitting the holder to teach students with emotional or cognitive impairment in grades K-12 and additional subjects based on second major or minor selections. Early advisement is critical to understanding Highly Qualified requirements.

This course focuses on Social Studies Major: Geography Concentration K-8, Elementary Standard Certificate.

Students must have attended all secondary and post-secondary institutions.

Para estudantes internacionais

In order to be recommended for student teaching, a student must:

  • Count no course with a grade lower than C- toward the major.
  • Have a minimum of 15 credit hours on the major taken at CMU and a cumulative average in the major of at least 3.0.
  • Have a grade of C+ or higher in the teaching methods course.
  • Have no more than six hours taken as CR/NC, including PSC 305.
  • Have a minimum of 14 credit hours at the 300 level or higher.

They must demonstrate a proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (minimum score of 550 PBT, 213 CBT, or 79 IBT)
  • International English Language Testing System (minimum score of 6.5)
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (minimum score of 77)
  • Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 53)
  • ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112

Students competing in intercollegiate athletics must submit a qualifying ACT or SAT score to meet NCAA eligibility requirements. Apply by May 15 if you are beginning classes in the fall semester. Apply by October 1 to begin classes in the spring semester.
