Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation and Management focuses on the ecology of wild animals, including the study of their biology, their relationships with each other, humans, and the physical and biological environment that comprise their habitat. Wildlife and fishery biologists develop strategies to maintain biodiversity and habitat, help rare and endangered species to recover, manage populations of harvested animals, enforce laws, monitor populations of plants and animals, manage refuges and hatcheries, design and implement research projects, eliminate invasive species, develop computer models, and educate the public. Graduates of the program are employed as Wildlife and Fishery Biologists by federal and state resource-management agencies and by other conservation organizations. Undergraduates can pursue an option in either Wildlife Conservation and Management or Fisheries Conservation and Management.
All programs in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment emphasize applications of ecological principles for conservation and management of plant, animal, and water resources at local and global scales, and solutions to negative impacts of human activity. Students complete courses that provide a foundation in natural resource science, conservation, and management, and elective courses that allow students to explore areas of interest.
