Help create a better world for all people, animals, and the earth through Humane Education. Humane Education is a unified course of study that explores the connections between human rights, environmental preservation, and animal protection and provides learners with the knowledge, tools, and motivation to become conscientious and engaged citizens for a healthy, just, and humane world. Apply your heart, hands, and mind to become a social change-maker who educates and inspires others to take action.

Valparaiso University and the Institute for Humane Education work as partners to offer several nationally unique online graduate programs in humane education. Our experienced humane education faculty will teach you how to effect systemic change by learning about the interconnected issues of environmental ethics, animal protection, and human rights.

Humane Education Programs

We offer four graduate program options in Humane Education.

Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Humane Education (36 credits) is designed for classroom educators. This program does not lead to licensure for Humane Education or any other area.

Master of Arts (M.A.) in Humane Education (36 credits) is designed for educators who wish to work outside of school settings, such as through community work, non-profits, arts activism, social services, law, and many other professions.

Graduate Certificate in Humane Education (either stand-alone or added to an existing degree) (15 credits) is designed for individuals who wish to add a certificate in Humane Education to their existing credentials.

Applicants must: Graduate from an accredited college or university, Earn a 3.0 GPA (B average) in all undergraduate and/or graduate coursework. English proficiency: 6.0 minimum IELTS with no more than two sub scores below 6.0, 75 minimum TOEFL internet-based, 56 minimum PTE.

To qualify for an admission recommendation into a Graduate School program, all doctorate, master’s, and certificate applicants must: Graduate from an accredited college or university; Graduate with a 3.0 GPA (B-average) in all undergraduate and/or graduate coursework.

English proficiency may be met with the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Pearson Test of English (PTE). 6.0 minimum IELTS with no more than two sub scores below 6.0; 75 minimum TOEFL internet-based score must come directly from ETS to be considered valid for admission; Certain programs require a higher IELTS or TOEFL score; 56 minimum PTE; Completion of a recognized English second language (ESL) program; GRE is not required for most programs.
