Each year, millions of people attend higher education institutions. Some students are fresh out of high school, while others may be returning after a long absence. Regardless of the reason, higher education institutions can impact the lives of millions of students each year. To ensure that students are successful, it takes hundreds of staff members at all levels (i.e., entry, mid-level, and upper-level), working together to make students’ experiences a positive one and to assist students in accomplishing their educational goals.
College and university administrators can participate in a number of professional specialties. Today’s colleges and universities are a complex, highly layered management organization with potentially thousands of clients and far reaching influence in the community. This position will be one of the most challenging leadership roles in all of education.
M.Ed. students would be eligible for any higher education institutional entry-level position in such areas as Admissions, Residential Life, Financial Aid, & Registrar's Office and could serve as an academic advisor, career placement advisor, etc. Mid-level positions include coordinator and director in any area of academic or student affairs. Students with a Ph.D. or Ed.D. could also qualify for upper-level administrative positions at the Associate Dean level in academic or student affairs-related positions or work for the state or federal government as higher education policy analysts and a wide range of other education related positions. In addition, doctoral students could possibly qualify for a faculty position.
