The Ph.D. Program in Civil Engineering is designed for students who want both specialized coursework in topics around the built environment and the judicious use of natural resources, as well as the flexibility to tailor their program to specific career needs.

Program Objectives

Our program educational objectives are reflected in the achievements of our recent alumni.

Research and Practice: Alumni will successfully engage in the research, practice, or both, related to the practice of civil engineering within academia, industry, government and private practice, where they will work toward sustainable solutions in a technical specialty area. These sectors include construction, environmental, geotechnical, structural and transportation engineering and water resources. Alumni will be able to synthesize technical knowledge of engineering analysis and design to identify, formulate and solve problems of professional interest and importance.

Professional Growth: Alumni will advance their skills through research, innovation, professional growth and development activities.

Service: Alumni will perform service to society and the engineering profession through membership and participation in professional societies, government, educational institutions, civic organizations and humanitarian endeavors.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Ph.D. program in the Civil Engineering program will be able to: Evaluate the effectiveness of a designed experiment and the implications of the resulting data; Verify and justify the solution to a complex civil engineering problem, including the use of appropriate tools and techniques; Develop and evaluate new, advanced technical knowledge in a specialized area of civil engineering; Synthesize and explain the relevance and application of new, advanced technical knowledge in both technical and non-technical terms.

Applicants who wish to complete a master's degree while pursuing a doctorate must apply for admission to the master's program. Students with TOEFL scores of 550 (Paper-based); 213 (Computer-based); 79 (Internet-based); 6.5 (IELTS).

Para estudantes internacionais

To be considered for acceptance into a doctoral degree program, you are required to have an appropriate academic background as described by the individual Ph.D. program and evidence of a high level of achievement, including GPA in your prior studies.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required for all international applicants not holding a degree from a United States post-secondary institution. The minimum score required is 79 for the Internet-based TOEFL exam, 213 for the computer-based TOEFL exam, or 550 for the paper-based TOEFL exam. A minimum score of 6.5 with no sub-score lower than 6.0 is required for the IELTS exam.
